Minnesota Medicaid Reimburses for Telehealth

Overview Telemedicine is the delivery of health care services or consultations while the patient is at an originating site and the licensed health care provider is at a distant site. Telemedicine may be provided by real-time two-way, interactive audio and visual communications, including secure videoconferencing or store-and-forward technology to provide or support health care delivery. The telemedicine services facilitate the patient’s assessment, diagnosis, consultation, treatment, education, and care management.

Eligible Providers
Eligible providers are mental health professionals who are qualified under Minnesota Statute 245.462 Subd. 18 or mental health practitioners working under the supervision of a mental health professional.

To be eligible for reimbursement, providers must self-attest that they meet all of the conditions of the MHCP telemedicine policy by completing the Provider Assurance Statement for Telemedicine (DHS-6806) (PDF).

Eligible Recipients

MHCP members are eligible to receive their mental health services via telemedicine when:

  • Telemedicine is determined medically appropriate (see Eligible Providers for service exceptions)
  • The member has consented to using a telemedicine method before receiving services

The member must be present to receive service through the telemedicine method.

Covered Services

MHCP covers medically necessary mental health services delivered by a health care provider via telemedicine.

Payment for telemedicine services is limited to three visits per calendar week per member.
